Entering the UAE in 2026: visa on arrival, advance visas and transit

Check passport eligibility, the separate GCC-resident entry permit, ICP versus Dubai GDRFA application channels and transit immigration before booking.

Travelers with suitcases walking through Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates

Visiting Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah in 2026? Check your exact passport and journey, not a blanket “everyone gets a 30-day visa.” UAE entry can be visa-free, visa on arrival, prearranged tourist/visit permission, an advance GCC-resident eVisa or a sponsored long-stay entry. Travelling with the right documents and knowing whether your transit requires passing Immigration are more useful than buying an agent's generic package.

1. Verify passport eligibility before paying

The UAE Government's July 2026 guidance explains that GCC citizens, certain nationality groups eligible for visa on arrival, and those requiring advance visas are not the same. It describes a general passport-validity requirement of at least six months from arrival for visitor entry, with other route-specific conditions. Nationality lists can change; check the exact passport before travel.

Example: A person lives and works in Qatar but is not a Qatari citizen. They cannot simply select “GCC national” based on a Qatar residence card. They should examine the GCC-resident entry permit and the conditions for their foreign passport, job/profession and remaining residency.

The UAE Government's GCC-resident eVisa guidance, updated July 2026, states that eligible GCC residents must obtain an electronic permit before arrival. Its ordinary described permit allows a 30-day stay from entry, extendable once for 30 days, subject to approval; it sets conditions including GCC residence valid at least one year from arrival, passport valid at least six months and an approved profession. These are GCC-resident-specific requirements, not universal tourist rules, and application/permit issuance remain discretionary.

2. How to obtain a real advance visa

The UAE Government's July 2026 application channel directory identifies the ICP online system and app, Dubai's General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), and authorised service/typing centres. Eligible tourist visa processing can also involve UAE-based carriers, hotels and licensed agencies as described in the tourist visa overview.

Ask the issuer or sponsor which legal authority, category, entry count, permitted stay, total government/service fee and approval reference will apply. Verify the issuer independently before paying. A payment receipt, agent-prepared draft or visa request marked “in process” is not a granted travel visa.

Illustrative situation: A traveller sends passport scans and pays an unknown social-media account promising “guaranteed Dubai residence in 24 hours”. Before sending funds, they should verify the actual applicant/sponsor through ICP/GDRFA or the airline's official visa route and demand the issued approval reference. Neither influencer endorsement nor a mockup constitutes entry permission.

3. Transit may require an entry visa

A connection at DXB, AUH or SHJ does not automatically entitle you to enter the UAE. On a single protected ticket with bags through-checked, you may stay in the international transit zone subject to airport/airline rules; with separate tickets, luggage collection, a hotel or a change of airports, border entry may be necessary.

The official government transit visa page describes particular 48-hour and 96-hour transit visa arrangements through eligible UAE airlines, with conditions and advance processing. These are not a visa-on-arrival right for every transit passenger. Ask the airline whether a transit visa is actually available for your nationality and precise itinerary.

Example: A person lands in Abu Dhabi but has a separate ticket departing Dubai eight hours later. That is not an airside terminal transfer. Check lawful UAE entry, road connection and baggage/check-in requirements before buying the combination.

4. At check-in and after landing

Prepare the passport with the appropriate validity, approved visa/permit if needed, first stay address, reachable sponsor/contact, onward/return arrangements and funds/evidence requested for your category. Confirm that the issued document has your correct passport number, name, date, permitted entry count and travel dates.

At entry, inspect the actual permission/recorded last stay date, which may differ from the visa's overall validity for presenting yourself at the border. A visitor permission is not local work authorisation; obtaining a UAE job offer later may require the employer to arrange a separate lawful work/residence transition.

If you want a longer family, virtual-work or employment stay, use the UAE work/long-stays guide, not a repeated tourism visa-on-arrival strategy.

Before booking a nonrefundable trip

Match your passport to the actual visa or visa-free route, identify who issues any advance permission and check whether your transit requires entering the UAE. After arrival, check the stay-end date you were actually granted rather than mistaking the visa's use-by date for permission to remain. If any step is unclear, give the responsible authority or airline your specific passport details and complete itinerary before paying, rather than relying on an agent's blanket 30-day promise.

Before travelling: Exact nationality eligibility, sponsor approvals, profession restrictions, service fees and transit entry rules depend on your passport and itinerary and can change. The July 2026 official material explains the general routes, not individual approval. Check the relevant UAE government, ICP or Dubai GDRFA channel and your airline before committing to tickets or paying an agent.
