Using public transport in Dubai? Choose a payment product for your real route, then check the final walk or bus connection. Dubai's Metro, Tram and many buses use nol, but Abu Dhabi city transport has a separate system. A card that pays for a Dubai journey should not be assumed to cover every UAE intercity/city service.
The fare decision
The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) official fare page currently shows seven fare zones. For ordinary nol Silver or eligible Personal fares, this means:
| Zones crossed | Silver/eligible Personal | Single regular Red Ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Within one zone | AED 3 | AED 4 |
| Two adjacent zones | AED 5 | AED 6 |
| More than two zones | AED 7.50 | AED 8.50 |
These are the operator's current fare inputs, not a quote for any particular route. Gold class and eligibility-based discounts use different products. If making multiple journeys, check real card purchase costs, stored balance and recharge options, not fare alone.
Illustrative route comparison: Someone makes two one-zone Silver journeys on 22 workdays: 2 × 22 × AED3 = AED132 in base journeys. RTA's current 30-day one-zone pass is AED140, so on those trips alone the pass isn't cheaper. Extra covered journeys, longer routes or a different period could reverse the result.
1. A pass is not always available on any card
The RTA fare table gives regular 7-day Silver prices of AED50/80/110 for one/two/all zones and 30-day prices AED140/230/350, respectively. It says anonymous Silver/Gold cards can buy a 7-day travel pass only, while registered Silver/Gold can buy 7-, 30-, 90- and 365-day products. A new visitor must confirm the necessary registration/account and product type before assuming a month pass will work.
Example: A first-time tourist wants a 30-day Silver pass but holds an anonymous card. The issue is registration/product eligibility, not merely insufficient funds. Ask RTA for the current purchase/channel options and use ordinary stored-value travel until an appropriate product is available.
2. Connect Metro and bus correctly
Dubai's RTA says a covered Metro-to-bus connection within 30 minutes after checking out, with a fresh bus check-in, may be charged as one journey under the combined zone calculation. The table also permits up to three applicable transfers, with maximum trip duration and other restrictions. The rule is not a blanket free ride on every bus after any stop or an automatic discount on a taxi.
Use the normal route planner to verify exact station, exit, feeder bus, direction and operating hours. Check a station's accessibility and the distance you must walk outdoors—summer heat and luggage can turn “next to Metro” into a difficult arrival.
3. The first journey from DXB
Before boarding the Metro from Dubai International Airport, confirm which terminal and rail station actually serve your flight, and whether your destination is accessible along the relevant line. Some destinations require a bus, taxi or long walk. Compare Metro fare + last-mile travel with an official taxi or arranged transfer if arriving late, with substantial baggage or young children.
Do not use one generic 'airport to city fare': zones and chosen card change the cost. Save an alternate route when there are maintenance windows or disrupted services.
4. Abu Dhabi is a different transport decision
For Dubai-to-Abu Dhabi travel, check the latest RTA inter-emirate bus route, departure point, payment acceptance and luggage rules; upon arrival check Abu Dhabi Mobility for local buses/payment and final-mile journey. A Dubai nol product does not automatically serve as an Abu Dhabi local city-bus ticket, and a published bus route should not be assumed to operate unchanged forever.
Example: You plan an Abu Dhabi hospital appointment from Dubai. A cheap bus can be useful, but add the travel to the Dubai departure station, the inter-emirate trip, Abu Dhabi local connection, appointment buffer and return. A direct vehicle may be more practical for some time-critical or mobility-sensitive trips.
5. Travel and housing checklist
For a planned commute, write down the real stop/exit, fare zones, card/pass eligibility, travel frequency, heat-exposed walking time and last running service. For a rental decision, include actual commute cost alongside rent and cooling in the UAE cost-of-living guide. A cheaper home requiring taxis every day can be more expensive than the listing suggests.
Before buying a transit card or pass, check the zones you will cross, your eligibility, the actual trip fare and the 30-minute Metro/bus transfer condition where relevant. Dubai and Abu Dhabi use different systems; confirm your exact route and operating hours with the appropriate operator.
